China Travel 101: How NOT to Get Your Wallet Absolutely DEMOLISHED by Tourist Traps! #WTFChina #SaveYourCash 1

Oh, I was quite impressed with Shenzhen initially but my good impressions gradually vanished under the influence of those “nowhere-to-be-seen-one-moment-and-right-next-to-you-the-next” electric scooters and those roadside stalls occupying pedestrian walkways.

    • Here's a big gripe about electric scooters – also to remind my playmates!

      • Attention, friends! If you're unfamiliar with traffic conditions in China, especially Shenzhen, be very careful when walking!
      • Many electric scooters just dash onto sidewalks and they are virtually noiseless; one moment it was nowhere, next moment it zipped past you. This could really startle or hit someone.
      • When walking, keep your eyes away from your phone! Pay extra attention to people around, especially in relatively narrow or crowded places.
    • There are also those roadside stalls:

      • I know that roadside stalls add to the atmosphere of a city; some of them indeed sell edible snacks and convenient small items.
      • However! Lots of booths encroach on pedestrian walkways directly. With paths not being too wide in the first place, this encroachment takes up more than half of the space and walking straight becomes impossible. The experience is worse than terrible!
      • In addition, sometimes these stalls might leave trash and oily stains behind; it's far from ideal!

I hope Shenzhen can improve its management in these aspects otherwise its urban image and traveler’s mood certainly will be badly influenced!

I feel like other places are better than Shanghai – they have mountains, scenic waters, and great food. It's a shame I was born here; my whole life is in Shanghai, so there's not much I can do about it.

  • Guangzhou: It's Great! ...Just Don't Expect Me Back.
    S Steve Beatty
    1. That's clearly a sweeping generalization. I respect and understand your feelings, but to draw such conclusions based on just a few days' experience shows a fundamental lack of respect and understanding of Guangzhou.
    2. You weren't really here to travel; you were just here to take photos for your social media to show off. Guangzhou is modest and low-key, without too many 'prestige projects' for you to photograph. It's normal that you prefer Shenzhen, which is shiny and glamorous, since you only look at the surface and don't understand depth and substance.
    3. Since you're from Jiangsu, why don't you recommend those restaurants, including dessert shops, that you claim taste no different from Guangzhou's Cantonese cuisine? Let everyone go and compare. It's normal you can't appreciate the uniqueness of 'Food in Guangzhou'; after all, you're just here for photos and don't know how to savor the flavors.
    4. If your taxis always took 10-15 minutes or more to arrive, and it wasn't during peak hours, then it's probably just your bad luck.
    5. Discussing urban management with you would be like casting pearls before swine. Let's just drop it.

  • Taiwan: Just Me, or a Bit Meh?
    S Steve Beatty

Whether a place is 'fun' really depends on how you explore it. I personally love just wandering the streets, trying delicious food I come across, and visiting areas where locals live. If the street scenes are beautiful and there's good food, I consider it fun, rather than judging a place solely by its famous tourist attractions.
