AVOID THIS 'BOUTIQUE' STAY Near Yongqing Fang, Guangzhou! 💣 TOTAL RIP-OFF!Oh my gosh, everyone! I'm speechless right now!
-
I was planning to visit the Yongqing Fang (an old street area with a unique charm and great for taking pictures) and Shamian Island (a small island full of European ambiance), so I wanted to find somewhere close to stay
.

I saw the top recommendation on a booking app, and the photos weren’t terrible; it had a projector and other fancy amenities. I knew that the photos were enhanced, but this experience was a total nightmare!
. When I entered the room, there was water puddle splashing on the ground
– this is not the worst part.
. The bed️ was like as hard as a piece of wood (just kidding, but still, extremely hard)! Be careful if you want to roll over in such a small bed that your feet might bump into the end of the bed.
. There were just two disposable toothbrushes given, and even no disposable slippers at all.
. The tiny restroomcould only let one person stand sideways.
. These slippers provided have a 'historical touch' looks kind of old and dirty.
. The towels and tissues 🧻 have some unknown old smell.
. To add salt to the injury, the projector was just like a pixelated TVin childhood (about hygiene, everyone can decide for themselves if they want to trust it
).

What’s more, I booked during the National Day holiday (golden week, when many places charge more) — it was 210 RMB per night
! Honestly, for this price, you can find much better accommodations by adding just a little more.
(By the way, after staying there, they did not offer a refund, and I argued for a long time until they admitted to giving half a refund.)

️
️ IMPORTANT WARNING: Absolutely, ABSOLUTELY must carefully read the reviews from other guests!
️
️
️
- The photos online might look different from the actual room, as the condition and facilities may be less expected than one would think.
- Still, it is closer to Yongqing Fang and Shamian Island (just the way I can console myself), although the small alley in the old town really gives me eerie feeling especially at night with not enough lights (Especially for girls, they may feel unsafe
).
Travel tips summary:
- Make sure you thoroughly read the reviews from other guests before booking!
- Carefully look at the pictures and descriptions of the surrounding areas, especially if you care about safety at night. Check if the accommodation is in dimly lit old alleys and stay away if needed.
- Of course, don’t forget to consider your budget
.
I hope everyone won't make the same mistake as I did! Stay tuned for what others say about their local experiences!

My Hangzhou Guide: 'You REALLY Shouldn't Have Come!' – Tourist Traps & Scams EXPOSED!Here's our itinerary for your reference. If yours looks like this, think twice before booking:
Day 1: A 'free' visit to the outer area of Xixi Wetland Park (you have to pay to go inside – they didn't mention it was just the outskirts at first), then Wuzhen in the afternoon.
Day 2: Nanxun, Fuyan Temple, then Xitang (which included a complimentary boat ticket).
Day 3 (highly recommend ditching the tour here for free-and-easy): Three shopping stops, followed by a West Lake boat ride after 6 PM. -

✈️ Shanghai 'Magic City' Food: The Hits, The Misses & The 'Seriously, WTF?!' (Eats & Drinks - Pt. 1)I have just returned from a four-day, three-night trip to Shanghai, with my head filled to the brim with thoughts of the delicious food I had there! Here's my list of the top meals you should try if you're visiting Shanghai—also known as "Magic City." I have marked those that are absolutely indispensable (
) so that you don't miss them. Of course, I will point out the meals I did not enjoy, but I won't be criticizing them too harshly. Oh, and keep an eye out for my next article on recommended sights and attractions in Shanghai!
Highlights (My Top Picks)
- 1️⃣ Xiao Yang Shengjian
- This is a Shanghai specialty, featuring a golden and crispy bottom, and juicy meat filling wrapped inside a pan-fried bun.
- We ordered: Shrimp and Vegetable Pan-fried Trio (RMB 22.5, includes three different flavors); the 'Sichuan pepper' has a slight numbing spice flavor, while 'Chinese Winter Cabbage' is a fresh, fragrant vegetable. The signature original flavor with the Chinese winter cabbage filling is especially delicious!
- We also got some bean curd skin pork dumplings (RMB 15), made by wrapping meat filling inside thin bean curd skin and served in a broth with gluten pieces. It was very savory.
- Oil-processed tofu, beef slices, and rice vermicelli soup (RMB 14) is another soup dish I loved. It features fried tofu bubbles, beef slices, and rice vermicelli. The stock is great, so you must make sure to give it a taste!
- 2️⃣ Butterfly cookies at International Hotel
- The desserts in this old hotel were renowned, and especially its buttery butterfly biscuits, a crispy biscuit with a rich buttery flavor.
- Remember to buy the original large butterfly cookies (RMB 25)! When we went it was off-season and we didn’t have to wait in line. The crisp cookie crumbles are filled with sweet granules that give a unique texture. At a distance, one can smell the thick butter aroma.

1️⃣ The Black Pearl Diner Gouping Dinner at Solo Italian Restaurant (RMB 358 per lunch set meal)
- Black Pearl is a Chinese gourmet food rating system akin to Michelin stars.
- Appetizer: Tarte of beef tartare, black olives, avocado, and melon with Parma ham.
- Main Course: Roasted chicken, cut of Chilean fine beef roast and steak.
- Dessert: Ice cream cake.
- Overall, the meal disappointed–it didn’t particularly satisfy appetite-wise, and wasn’t worth the price.
-
2️⃣ Lan Xin Restaurant
- This is a well-known restaurant in Shanghai, famous for traditional local dishes.
- Stewed liver with sauce (RMB 32) - WARNING: To me, this dish was sweet beyond what I can handle. This is something common to Shanghai cuisine but I cannot get used to it.
- Fried pig spare ribs with pepper and salt (RMB 38) - This dish is fried, salted and peppered pork loin strips. It didn’t impress me, as the meat dried out and lacked juice content.
- Dongcao stewed with rice wine (RMB 25) - This vegetable dish prepared with local greens cooked in rice wine proved unique, making it worth trying.
