Thinking of Taiwan for Easter or May Day - What am I in for? 1

Hello, everyone! I’m planning to take a trip to the beautiful island of Taiwan while I’m still a student abroad!

To be honest, here’s what I had in mind:

    1. Visit Tainan: This place is a gem in the south of Taiwan with a rich history and a slower pace of life. Just imagine riding a bicycle by the seaside and enjoying its "simple folk lifestyle".
    2. Alternatively, head straight for Taipei—the famous capital city where sumptuous delicacies await! I'd love to just dive into the ocean of yummy dishes here.

However, here are a few concerns:

    1. I haven’t found anyone to travel together with—I need a traveling partner/coworker (we call them “Tāzǐ” over here).
    2. Well, as a child, I consumed a truckload of Taiwanese ghost stories and played countless horror games set in Taiwan (the frightening kind)! Therefore, my courage is somewhat limited and it's somewhat nerve-wracking to travel alone (૮₍ ᐢ̶̴̤̒¬_¬⁗ ₎)ა).

I would therefore like to seek some advice from fellow travelers:

    • Is Taiwan safe for tourists during this specific timeframe?
    • Are there any must-collide experiences for visitors from out-of-town that I shouldn't miss?
    • ⚠️ Especially what scams or traps must I watch out against?
      • Where might a tourist trip awry and end up feeling regretful?
      • What local customs and rules or little details may confound people unfamiliar with the area? Can someone kindly shed light on this?
      • What’s the best way to deftly dodge these unfortunate encounters?
    • And a highly recommended hotel that provides warm and comfortable accommodation is also on my radar.
    • Of course, do drop by a suggestion or two about the delicious restaurants too!

Thank you in advance to everyone for your help!

Looking for a female travel buddy for a trip sometime between May 1st and May 20th. I'm free during this period and will be departing from Hong Kong. It'd be ideal if you're good at taking photos and have a good sense of aesthetics. The main focus is travel, with taking some great photos as a bonus!

My application for the Taiwan entry permit has been submitted, but there's been no update on its status yet.

Staying in a youth hostel... my roommates are all backpackers... it's pretty lively.

Wow, I haven't heard the term 'backpacker' in mainland China for ages, hahaha! I stayed in youth hostels too during those wonderful years, but I'm not so keen on it anymore!

I'm going on the 15th. It's safe. I've been twice already, and this will be my third trip.

Okay! Could I ask, sis, for Taipei, what's a typical budget for a hotel that offers a good experience? I'm really worried about taking a gamble and ending up in a gloomy, unpleasant place.

Not safe! You risk gaining weight from all the amazing food!

It's very safe. It really depends on your budget. For more affordable options, chain hotels generally offer better quality.

It's quite safe, but it's still advisable not to go out too late at night.

Got it! Everyone else is saying the same. I pretty much understand now; the safety level should be similar to Hong Kong and Macau.

Taiwan is genuinely very safe. I once left my MacBook Pro at the airport, and a kind person handed it into the nearby police station. I went to pick it up the next day.

Even when I was 14, I could go out alone in the wee hours of the morning and feel quite safe and at ease.
