Shenzhen on a Budget? LOL, Good Luck. 1

Indeed, my trip to Shenzhen has been quite eye-opening, so allow me to share my experiences, particularly for those of you planning a visit to Shenzhen. Listen up, it's for your own good!

I'll be straightforward; I'm not one of those folks who obsess over saving every penny or limit their daily expenses strictly to a few hundred yuan. However, when it comes to transportation, if I can take the bus or subway, I generally choose not to hail a taxi.

Shenzhen is big! Really big, in fact!

    • During this trip, I chose a hotel in Bao'an District (it's a district in Shenzhen - keep in mind that heading downtown or to any popular attractions might involve some travel time). The thing is, wherever you intend to go, expect at least a two-hour subway ride.
    • For instance, traveling to Da Mei Sha and Xiao Mei Sha (these are famous beaches) means a single journey alone will take about two hours.
    • Just the previous day, I ventured out to Jiudousha Beach and the observatory near Dapeng. It entailed taking a subway, then changing to an公交车, and by the time I got there, it had taken me four hours! Coming back took another four hours. Goodness gracious, I spent eight whole hours traveling in a single day!

Important heads-up: consider the cost in terms of traffic fares and time!

    • Taking a taxi? Each trip would cost upwards of two hundred yuan - I find that quite steep. (And even if you do take a taxi, a single journey still tends to take around two hours because Shenzhen is just so vast.)
    • Here's what happened: After three days in Shenzhen, I felt as though I hadn't spent too much on dining out due to the large amount spent on transportation alone!

    However, there were delightful surprises!

    • The beauty of Jiudousha was nearly heart-wrenching. Upon arrival, I realized all the traveling fatigue had been worth it. That sea water was transparent as crystal glass!
    • I earnestly recommend to you: Choose a clear fine day to visit Jiudousha, because the beauty will never come through in photos.

When you're out and about in Shenzhen, definitely use apps like Douyin, Dianping, and Meituan. Check out each place on them before you go in – you'll save a lot! For getting around, the subway is your best bet and won't break the bank. If you absolutely need a car, opt for a ride-sharing service; it's way cheaper than a regular taxi. Also, keep in mind Shenzhen is a long, stretched-out city. It's best to plan your activities within one district per day, or you'll feel like you're spending all your time just traveling. Before you visit, do your homework! Figure out which districts your must-see spots are in, and find a centrally located place to stay. This will save you a ton of time and money on transportation.

I cancelled my hotel in Bao'an District and rebooked in Futian. Now, most places are within a 40-minute subway ride, and many are just 20 minutes away! Even the furthest spot, Dameisha Beach Park, is only about an hour. Definitely the right call!

Hey sis, next time you visit, try staying in Futian or Luohu, or Nanshan if those don't work out. Bao'an is just too far from most attractions! Also, things in Shenzhen are generally quite expensive. Luohu might be a bit cheaper, but overall, it's pricey everywhere. It's not like they're specifically overcharging tourists; it's just an expensive city.

Yep, got it. Definitely not staying in Bao'an next time!

Forget Bao'an; even from Futian or Nanshan, people don't often trek out to Dapeng. It's really far, and public transport isn't great. Plus, if you drive on holidays, you're guaranteed to hit massive traffic. Next time, pick your accommodation based on the main areas you want to explore. Around the Shenzhen Airport, besides Xixiang Mangrove Forest, OH Bay, and Tiezaishan Park, there isn't much else to see.

Actually, staying in Futian is a good idea. It makes it really convenient to get to places like Shenzhen Bay Park, Qianhai Bay Park, Dapeng Peninsula, and Judiaosha.

Shenzhen is a long, narrow city that stretches from east to west. Bao'an, where you stayed, is pretty much on the far western end, while those beaches are mostly on the far eastern side, making it quite a distance. Next time, take a look at a map and try to find accommodation somewhere more central.

Hahahaha, Judiaosha was already stunning, so I didn't venture any further that way.

Hey sis, I went to the observatory today. Is it still worth making a six-hour round trip just for Judiaosha?

Last time we took a taxi from Judiaosha to the observatory, it only took about half an hour when there was no traffic. Sis, maybe check out the taxi options? The bus really does take a long time.
