Rating China's Big Cities (100% Objective) - Out of 10
-
Sure, here is the rewritten version suitable for foreign friends to read while preserving the original humor and suggestions:
-
Harbin - 5 out of 10
- The city does have some unique Russian-like architecture, which is quite impressive when viewed with ice and snow sculptures during winter.
- But the overall environment might be a bit average and not especially clean.
- Tip: Local folks may seem direct and sometimes hasty, mind their language! Service sectors are also pretty average, keep your expectations low.
-
Changchun - 7 out of 10
- To be honest, Changchun might not have too many tourist attractions, nor much eating specialties. Some even nickname it a "desert of tourism" and "desert of gourmet food."
- However, one thing they've really invested is the urban greening efforts, leading to a lot of greenery around town.
- Moreover, people there are friendly and hospitable, which really contributes to the positive atmosphere.
-
Shenyang - 6 out of 10
- Shenyang doesn't have particularly remarkable features that could make you fall in love at first sight.
- Frankly speaking, there's a little bit of uncleanliness here too.
- Notice: Similar to other Northeast cities, locals may sound straightforward and harsh, but they’re heart-warmth and welcoming.
- Business activities are frequent, shopping is convenient, and prices are reasonable.
-
Xi'an - 6 out of 10
- With its historical legacy like Ancient City Wall and Terracotta Warriors(those ancient earthen soldiers and horses)that blend beautifully with modern buildings.
- Anti-theft Tips: People crowd together, especially at scenic spots, watch your bags and phones because little guys(as we call pickpockets)will take it easy.
- Environment is not so clean.
-
Beijing - 7 out of 10
- As claimed, an international metropolis, with a balance of glorious ancient landmarks (like Palace Museum)and dynamic contemporary architectural designs, spectacular!
- While, the level of environmental care and greenness may seem just okay.
- Considering China's developed megacities, Beijing is slightly behind on the minute perfection.
- Little Life Tips: There are far fewer convenience stores than in Japan or Shanghai, shopping convenience gets a little off the track. Prices are still reasonable though.
-
Tianjin - 8 out of 10
- Urban environment seems decent with European architectural style to offer variety of sightseeings, never boring at all!
- Also, Xiangsheng performance(traditional Chinese comic performance)or having snacks like Jianbing Guozi and Guangdong Baozi (like those flaky buns by Dog-Not-Know-the-Baozi shop)must never miss!

Jinan gets a 7/10. The environment and food are just okay. I liked the local accent and there are plenty of handsome guys, but the city itself doesn't have any standout features.
-
Most people who've visited feel the same way you do. However, it's quite surprising to hear Nanjing described as messy and rundown while Changsha is clean and tidy.
-
Back in 2016, Changsha was in such a sorry state it was hard to look at. Secondhand smoke was everywhere, and hotel bedsheets were disgustingly dirty.
-
Changsha gets an 8/10. Huangxing Road at night is incredibly lively. It's a really great big city with tons of delicious food and a vibrant commercial scene. Prices are a bit on the high side, but the city is clean and well-kept.
-
Changsha? Clean and tidy?
-
Shanghai, 8/10. It definitely has the feel of a top-tier international city – China's most bustling global metropolis.
-
Nanjing gets a 6/10. Even though it's also a provincial capital in the Jiangnan region, there's a huge gap compared to Hangzhou. It felt dirty and disorganized. Wages are lower than Hangzhou, but a lot of things cost about the same. The general demeanor of the people was just average.
-
Changsha 8/10, Guiyang 3/10? And you call that 'objective'? That's hilarious!
-
Hefei, 8/10. Hands down, the big city with the most handsome guys! It's a very down-to-earth place with reasonable prices and a great sense of daily life. Huaihe Road Pedestrian Street is still bustling even at midnight. The only downside is that it's not a highly developed city, and its cleanliness could be better.
-
Guiyang deserves at least a 4/10; 3 is way too low.
-
Shenyang, 0/10. (And I'm from Shenyang.)
