Beijing Day 3: Officially Cooked. SOS!
-
Oh, after this trip to Beijing, I finally realized what it means to "measure a city with your feet"!
- On the last day, I was originally set on visiting the Forbidden City (the huge complex of palaces where former emperors resided, a must-visit spot!), but you know what happened? I just wanted to lay low and didn't want to go anywhere!
- The number of steps I took every day was always in the tens of thousands, starting from two or three thousand. My legs seemed like they had a mind of their own, and I was exhausted.
Caution for Friends Planning a Trip to Beijing:
- Comfortable shoes are key!
- The attractions in Beijing, especially large ones like the Forbidden City and the Great Wall, are massive and require extensive walking.
- What to do: Wear your most comfortable trainers or walking shoes, otherwise, your feet will start complaining before you know it!
- Don’t plan your itinerary too crazily!
- While it’s possible in theory to visit N number of attractions each day, your body will tell you that it’s not viable.
- What to do: Plan your itinerary leisurely, choose one or two key spots each day, and take it slow. Otherwise, you might become so tired that you lose interest in the beautiful scenery, which would be such a shame!
#Beijing's Tiring Walk Experience

Leaving Beijing, the city of 30,000 steps a day.
-
Is it doable to visit the National Museum in the morning and the Forbidden City in the afternoon?
-
I'm planning to take the kids. My husband says he's worried about getting too tired.
-
It's exhausting, so exhausting, and it's packed with people too.
-
I'm also planning a four-day, three-night trip. Tomorrow, it's the flag-raising ceremony, the Forbidden City, and a museum. Just thinking about it makes me super stressed!
-
That's intense! The Forbidden City and a museum all in one day. The queues at the National Museum are incredibly long.
-
Where are you guys staying? I'm not sure which hotel to book.
-
I'm staying at a Super 8 near Beijing South Railway Station, it's 280 RMB per night. It's pretty decent if you bring your own disposable bed linens, as the hotel ones don't feel very clean.
-
I have flat feet. After power-walking around Universal Studios for two days, last night my feet hurt just touching the ground. I bought a basin and soaked them for an hour. Feeling a bit better today, so I'm back to power-walking at the Forbidden City.
-
So envious! I still have another day at the Forbidden City tomorrow, and I can barely walk anymore.
-
Attended the flag-raising at dawn, went straight into the Forbidden City afterwards, then the Old Summer Palace in the afternoon. I walked so much I felt like sparks were flying!
-
That's incredible!
-
Is it cold enough to wear a woolen coat, dear?
-
30,000 steps every day for 5 days. The happiest moment each day was collapsing into bed.
-
So true! The best part is finally lying in your own bed at home.
-
It's true, every tourist visiting Beijing can't believe that exploring just one major attraction a day can be utterly exhausting. But when we Beijingers travel elsewhere, it's the opposite – everything seems so small and close. We can visit several places in a day and still have time left over, wondering where to go next!
-
Just getting from the Summer Palace to Universal Studios feels like a journey in itself. Besides Beijing, only Shanxi province gives me that same feeling of vastness – you definitely need to self-drive there.
-
Totally! I just took a walk around my neighborhood today and, oh my god, 13,000 steps already!
