Shanghai Might Be Tough, But Suzhou? Pure Venom.
-
Oh boy, when talking about Hangzhou, I really have to praise it — the surprise is nothing short of being unexpectedly "smacked" again and again.
And you know what? The Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai (Jiangzhefu), these regions located in the economically advanced eastern coastal areas of China, all seem somewhat alike. Trying to find a tranquil spot? Well, it's hard!
Here are some friendly reminders for those planning a trip:
- Everyone always says "Above there is heaven, below there are Suzhou and Hangzhou", referring to how beautiful Suzhou and Hangzhou are, much like heaven itself.
- But this time, I truly experienced what it means by "High hopes make for disappointment".
- Caution: If you're expecting the peaceful and romantic Jiangnan water villages in ancient poetry, make sure to adjust your expectations downward. Or else, just like me, you might feel disappointed because your expectations were too high and reality is too bleak.
- I'm becoming increasingly powerless. So where's that legendary Jiangnan flair? Honestly, I haven't really sensed it much.
- Caution: Many attractions might be heavily commercialized, and there are tons and tons of people, especially during holidays. To avoid the crowds, going during off-seasons or heading to tourist sites very early in the morning is recommended.
- Maybe I'm just too honest, and I really can't feel the beauty that isn't truly there.
- It could also be that I don't have that "sight of discerning beauty" and lack the worldly desires necessary to appreciate this side of life. Anyway, this trip was quite strenuous and somewhat disappointing.
