Shanghai May Day Survival Guide: Don't Get Fleeced!
-
Hello, everyone planning a trip to Shanghai! Especially if you're coming during crowded holidays like Labor Day
️.
I’ve lived in Shanghai for seven years and have been through countless disappointments. I must share my hard-won experiences with you all today
. Below are some overrated tourist hotspots that you should definitely avoid to prevent disappointment
️.
-
Avoid No. 1️⃣: Overcrowded Night Vista on the Bund
- The Bund, the iconic riverside area of Shanghai, is well-known for its historical buildings and magnificent skyline of Lujiazui’s financial district.
What You Might Expect: A romantic evening by the Huangpu River, capturing the enchanting night views of the Oriental Pearl Tower and other landmarks.
But In Reality: It's so crowded that it feels like a can of sardines! You might not even be able to fully extend your selfie stick!
Smart Alternatives: Navigate towards the North Bund Green Space or Sunset Observation Deck at the Pudong Art Museum. Here, people are fewer and you can enjoy the same beautiful sights while photographing with ease!
-
Avoid No. 2️⃣: Overpriced Xiaolongbao in Chenghuang Temple Area
- Located in Chenghuang Temple—the bustling traditional market district famed for its street snacks—is where many travelers flock for xiaolongbao—the iconic steamed bun filled with savory soup.
Pitfall Warning: Avoid those lines for shrimp-xiaolongbao costing over RMB50 each per serving—run away!
The Truth: Their buns have thick crusts and little soup, which local residents simply don't go for.
Local Recommendations: Visit Jiajia Tangbao on Sichuan Zhonglu or Laile Xiaolong on Nanjing Lu. Costing only around RMB30 in total, you'll get a super satisfying experience!
-
Avoid No. 3️⃣: Crowded Photos at WuKang Building
- Located within the beautiful area of Wutong District, renowned for its lush tree-lined streets from the former French Concession, the famous landmark of WuKang Building attracts many visitors wishing to take photos.
Not Recommended: Spending an hour queuing under direct sunlight at midday just to take a photo surrounded by strangers?
Furthermore: Despite walking thousands of steps through this scenic area, finding a shared bicycle may prove impossible.
Recommended Route: Start from Wuyuan Road and wind your way until Anfu Road. Along the way, there are numerous great cafes and designer boutiques; a perfect scenic photography destination!
-
Avoid No. 4️⃣: Rushing Through Disneyland Like a Special Forces Soldier
- While Disneyland is indeed impressive, there's no need to cram everything into a single day!
Unwise Choices: Getting up early, queueing for all rides at opening hours, packing your itinerary tight.
Result of Crowds: Waiting over an hour to ride the most popular attractions, possibly unable to find a car back home after fireworks shows.
Relaxed Approach: Arrive late afternoon after hours. People are thinner, so visit some less-queued attractions such as Pirates of the Caribbean or Voyage to the Crystal Grotto.
- See the final fireworks show, and enjoy the place with far less crowd!
-
Avoid No. 5️⃣: Purchasing "Yiwu Goods" from Tianzi Fang
- Renovated from a traditional alleyway house complex, the commercialized Tianzifang now feels overwhelming despite its trendy charm. "Yiwu Goods" refers to inexpensive souvenir-like items typical of Yiwu, a city famous for wholesale goods.
Shopping Pitfall: Avoid those trinkets labeled as "Old Shanghai Mementos," ranging from keychains potentially more expensive than those found on Taobao (an e-commerce site) threefold.
And Furthermore: Walking in the narrow lanes of Tianzifang during summer might turn your holiday upside down.
Artisan Hobbies' Haven: Visit M50 Creative Park or Xian Suo Phase II, a new creative space, known for their extensive art installations and designer shops.
Some Useful Tips:
️Transportation: Download the "Metro Dadaode" app for seamless subway travel.
️Eating Out: For any internet-famous restaurants, ensure at least a three-day reservation or acquire online number queues for a smooth entry.
️Weather: Bring an umbrella, usable both in sunny and rainy weather! The Shanghai's weather change is as unpredictable as anyone is!
At last,
- The real beauty lies beyond the hustle and bustle of conventional must-see sites, in small quiet alleys filled with unique vibes and atmosphere.
- By bypassing those overly occupied locations, you can immerse yourself with the authentic charming essence of what we call the "Magic City."
Feel free to share your own experiences here—good or bad—or recommend hidden gems! #ShanghaiCityWalk
