So Long, Guangzhou! The City Where My Stomach Was *Never* Big Enough!
-
Hello everyone! I have just returned from a trip to Guangzhou, Zhuhai, and Shenzhen. I had planned to indulge my appetite in these cities, but unexpectedly, I couldn't fill my stomach to satisfaction on several occasions. The flavors of the dishes in those places tended to be light, which made me feel slightly nauseous after eating too much. Honestly, among these three cities, Zhuhai's foods were the best.
Here are my personal recommendations and impressions about specific restaurants:
Morning Tea - Dim Sum:
- We tried both Diandoude and Guangzhou Jiujia.
- Both provide excellent Cantonese dim sum, but the flavors became a bit overwhelming after consuming more dishes. Cantonese cuisine emphasizes the authenticity of ingredients, which might be uncomfortable for people who prefer stronger-tasting dishes like myself.
- I felt that Guangzhou Jiujia had a slightly better taste, so I would recommend this restaurant as my priority choice.
Sizzling Clay Pot Dishes:
- The place we ate at was named Ji Ba.
- Regarding this restaurant, I would say my experience was quite regular, plain even. It was the most disappointing meal of my trip! Apart from an acceptable oyster omelet (豪烙), the ginger milk pudding (姜撞雪糕) there was not significantly different from the spicy rice porridge cooked by chef Huang Liang. I simply could not fathom why anyone would endorse this place online!
Yu Ji Hong Kong Style Café:
- This place was amazing! It was the most filling meal of this trip!
- Everything we ordered tasted delicious without any disappointment. I cannot recommend it enough!
BBQ - (Sweet Variety):
- We picked Tang Ji BBQ.
- This is the sweet type of Cantonese specialty BBQ, which is not spicy. However, the number of food choices seemed rather limited.
Attention: If you are not accustomed to sweet-tasting BBQ, please be careful when ordering!
Sweet Soups or Desserts:
- We visited Jian Mie Tangshui.
- My experience with it was just okay—not too bad, but nothing impressive either. It is not worth making a special trip to have this. But if you happen to be in its vicinity, it will still be worthwhile to give it a taste.
Delicacies of Shenzhen:
- On the day I visited Shenzhen, the most fulfilling meal I enjoyed came from Tastien—a hamburger fast-food restaurant!
- Later, I ordered some delivery of snacks and finally tasted some authentic Chaoshan fried snacks. This was the last memorable meal I could enjoy before leaving. It simply tasted too good, and the fried dishes were like a lifeline!
Farewell to Guangzhou, Zhuhai, and Shenzhen—cities that left me feeling somewhat unsatisfied with their meals!
