It feels like Beijing isn't very welcoming to tourists. You have to walk ages to reach each attraction after getting off your transport. My legs were worn out just getting there, not from exploring the actual sights.

Exactly! The subway stations are so well-hidden. It's not exploring the attractions themselves that wears out your legs, but the long walks to get to them and all the queuing.

When I'd already walked 30,000 steps and then saw that staircase coming out of the subway, I instantly regretted my trip to Beijing.

Beijing's subway system is old, so a lot of stations don't have elevators.

Walked a total of 40km in three days. It was manageable, and I definitely fell asleep fast at night.

Oh my goodness, after reading these comments, it seems if I bring my parents, we should definitely go during an off-peak period and just take taxis everywhere. We (younger folks) can barely manage it; it's definitely too much for older parents.

Joined a tour group: woke up at 2 AM, left at 3 AM for the Tiananmen flag-raising, then off to the Summer Palace, and then the Old Summer Palace. The soles of my feet were on fire!
