WTF China: 180 Yuan Ticket to See... Absolutely Nothing? SCAM ALERT!
-
Hello everyone!
-
Have any of you just returned from Beijing? Say "hi"! How are your legs feeling? It seems that once people return from a visit to Beijing, they seem to disappear as if by magic. Are they too exhausted to speak or in awe of the magnificent sights?
-
Friendly reminder (especially for foreign friends!): Beijing is massive! The Chinese may understand how big it is, but foreign visitors may not have a clear idea. Let me explain this way: just take the Forbidden City (the former residence of the emperor), from the south gate to the north gate, without paying much attention to the palaces on both sides, it already takes a long time to walk straight through, let alone take a good look around.
-
As for the Great Wall, it is not a walk on level ground. Many segments are quite steep, and going up and down requires great physical endurance.
-
And here comes the important part - pay attention! - I'd like to give some advice to those who are planning a trip to Beijing:
- The most important thing is comfortable shoes! Don't wear new or ill-fitting shoes just for looks, because your feet will start complaining.
- It is not recommended to pack your schedule too tightly! The attractions in Beijing, such as the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace (the emperor's summer retreat), are enormous. Want to visit several places in one day? Then you may only be able to do a "trivial visit" without taking time to examine carefully.
- Plan ahead of time for transportation! Although Beijing's subway system is convenient, there might still be quite a distance between the subway station and the scenic spots. Taxis? Traffic jams during peak hours can make you doubt life.
- Do what you can, and take breaks when you feel tired, instead of forcing yourself to be overly enthusiastic. The purpose of travel is to have fun, not to use up all your strength.
So, have you been to Beijing before and can relate? Share your personal experiences and valuable advice with us, and let's help newcomers navigate through their experiences in Beijing together!

Feel free to share your experiences and tips for visiting Beijing.

It feels like Beijing isn't very welcoming to tourists. You have to walk ages to reach each attraction after getting off your transport. My legs were worn out just getting there, not from exploring the actual sights.
-
Exactly! The subway stations are so well-hidden. It's not exploring the attractions themselves that wears out your legs, but the long walks to get to them and all the queuing.
-
When I'd already walked 30,000 steps and then saw that staircase coming out of the subway, I instantly regretted my trip to Beijing.
-
That's brutal! Thank goodness I didn't have a suitcase with me.
-
I lost count of how many staircases like that I lugged my suitcase up.
-
Beijing's subway system is old, so a lot of stations don't have elevators.
-
I'm completely wiped out.
-
All I could think was: 'Legs, just keep moving, don't give up on me now!'
-
Walked a total of 40km in three days. It was manageable, and I definitely fell asleep fast at night.
-
Oh my goodness, after reading these comments, it seems if I bring my parents, we should definitely go during an off-peak period and just take taxis everywhere. We (younger folks) can barely manage it; it's definitely too much for older parents.
-
Older people really wouldn't be able to handle it.
-
Day one, and I'm already spent.
-
Haha, it's seriously exhausting.

Joined a tour group: woke up at 2 AM, left at 3 AM for the Tiananmen flag-raising, then off to the Summer Palace, and then the Old Summer Palace. The soles of my feet were on fire!
