    Feed Me Your Chinese Travel Titles: I Speak Fluent WTF! 1

    Would You Be Discouraged? Some Unfortunate Things to Know Before Visiting Guangzhou

    Ahem, dear friends thinking about visiting Guangzhou, please permit me one piece of advice: mentally prepare yourself beforehand, or you might encounter some "little misfortunes."

    Of course, there are still many delicious foods and fun things in Guangzhou, but here is a little inoculation I need to give you first.

    • Weather: "Walking into a Sauna" Alert!

    • We affectionately call Guangzhou the "City of Goats" (a name derived from an ancient myth), but during summer, it might feel more like a giant sauna.
    • Background Info: Guangzhou falls under subtropical monsoon climate, characterized primarily by its heat and high humidity. Especially from May to October, be prepared for instant sweat once you step outside - not rain, but perspiration!
    • How to deal with it?
      • Lightweight, breathable clothing is your savior.
      • Don't forget sunscreen, an umbrella, and even a portable fan - equip yourself with all that you can carry.
      • Drink plenty of water! Along the streets you'll find many Chinese herbal tea shops (known as 'zhengan shoushui'), which locals use to reduce internal heat and cool themselves down; you can try it, but don't drink too much cold tea all at once, or your stomach might suffer.

    • Crowds: Endless People Masses Everywhere!

    • No matter which attraction you visit, especially "Little Waist" (the nickname for Guangzhou Tower because of its slender shape), Zhongshan Road (a famous commercial street), expect crowds everywhere.
    • Background Info: Guangzhou is a huge city in South China, with a constant influx of residents, as well as tourists from all over. You can only imagine the congestion.
    • How to deal with it?
      • Try avoiding Chinese public holidays - like National Day (October 1-7) and Spring Festival.
      • Attempt early departure or visit some less popular spots.
      • Take a calm mindset - enjoying this bustling atmosphere has its own charm!

    • Daily Life Communication Barrier (Small Language Challenge)

    • Although younger people working in malls or hotels may know some English, communication might be challenging when visiting small stores or interacting with elderly locals who primarily speak Cantonese (Guangdong dialect).
    • Background Info: The primary local language in Guangzhou is Cantonese, while Mandarin is the official language. English-speaking普及度不如北京上海那么高。
      * 怎么办?
      • 下载翻译应用,简直是救命神器。
      • 学几句简单的粤语或者普通话,例如“你好 (Nǐ hǎo/Néi hóu)”、“谢谢 (Xièxiè/M̀h'gōi)”、“多少钱 (Duōshao qián/Géi dō chín)”,本地人会觉得你很有礼貌!
      • 手势和微笑是世界通用语言 - 表达想法有时甚至比言语更有效。

    • 注意!这些坑可别踩!
    * 打车: 尽量使用叫车应用程序(比如滴滴出行 - 类似Uber/Grab),这样价格透明,避免随便在路边拦出租车,因为某些车况或司机可能会绕路或抬价。
    * 景点购物: 景区里的小纪念品可能价格不太理想。如果想买纪念品或礼品,建议去上下九步行街(另一条热闹的商业街区)或当地市场,记得货比三家,也可以试着砍价(还价)。
    * 美食“陷阱”: 看到有长队的餐厅不一定就是最好的选择,可能是网络流量较大的餐馆。可以尝试查找当地的推荐、看看实际评价,用类似大众点评的应用程序。

    总的来说,广州是一座充满活力的城市,饮食也十分出色(尤其是点心 Dim Sum)!只要你提前做好准备,避开一些小问题,相信你的广州之旅一定会非常精彩!别说我没提醒你哟!😜

    In summary, Guangzhou is a vibrant city, renowned for its food (especially dim sum)! With ample preparation beforehand and avoidance of these little "misfortunes," no doubt your visit to Guangzhou will be an exciting adventure! I've told you now, haven't I? 😜

      If I hadn't made a quick escape today, this rain could've easily cut me off.

        It wasn't raining when I arrived, what a lucky coincidence!

          I wasn't exactly on a purely tourist trip; my main reason was the concert. I guess it was because of the heavy rain and the oppressive, muggy heat, right? The weather in my own area (judging by my IP) isn't much better either.
