Shanghai Now: June Travelers, Reroute ASAP!
-
Hello, ladies planning to visit Shanghai! Starting from June, Shanghai will enter its peak tourism season. Here are some tips and pitfalls to watch out for so that you won’t get into trouble!
- Travel and Accommodation
- If you’re heading to Disneyland, consider staying in Xujiahui. This is a prosperous area in Shanghai, and it’s convenient to take Metro Line 11 directly from here to Disneyland!
- The subway network in Shanghai is fully developed, connecting major transportation hubs such as Hongqiao Railway Station or Pudong International Airport straight to the city center.
- Note: Taking a taxi from the airport or railway station can often require long queues and waste a lot of time, especially during rush hour. Taking the subway is much faster and easier!
- For public transport in Shanghai, use the “Transport QR Code” on your smartphone (usually available on Alipay or WeChat Pay, or by downloading the "Metro Dàuduó" app), which is very convenient.
- Important Tip: Most tourist attractions in Shanghai can be reached via subway. There's really no need to take a taxi, especially during rush hour, when traffic jams can drag on endlessly!
- The Bund and Lujiazui
- The Bund is known for its European-style architecture and views of the opposite side of Huangpu River, including Lujiazui and its famous skyscrapers like the Oriental Pearl Tower.
- Note: The lights at the Bund switch off at 11 PM, so make sure to catch the night view earlier!
- Want to cruise along Huangpu River? Try taking a cheap 2-yuan public ferry. Although the sightline might not be as perfect as on a tour boat, this option allows you to fully experience the charm of Huangpu River at a great price!
- Too many people at the Bund? North Bund is where you should go instead. There you’ll find fewer people, still beautiful views of the Bund, historic international buildings, and those three famous Skyscrapers (Shanghai Tower, SWFC, and Jin Mao Tower).
- Visiting the Oriental Pearl has little appeal, as photo opportunities can easily be found outside on the skywalks, or even just gazing at the Bund's luminous views.
- After visiting Lujiazui, take a walk in Riverside Park, taking in the cool wind and evening views, or even take an evening ride, admiring the old buildings on the other side, all the while keeping nearby Museum of Art Pudong close to enjoy the light shows outside the museum walls!
- City Stroll and Main Attractions
- Wukang Building (a distinctive wedge-shaped building) has its best photos taken in the morning before noon; avoid it in the afternoon when it gets crowded, and also note that photographs taken at night have very limited appeal. After exploring, visit the chic Anfu Road, and don’t forget the Xujiahui Catholic Church and Xujiaxiu Bookhouse (Xujiahui Library) nearby.
- For Shanghai’s “Citywalk,” explore areas such as Xintiandi, Huaihai Middle Road, Nanjing West Road, Jing’an Temple, and Yuyao Road, each with their own unique charm.
- Yuyuan Garden and the City God Temple share similar Chinese traditional aesthetics. It is recommended to visit late in the evening, when the lighting enhances the interplay between old Shanghai and modernity.
- Note: Avoid buying snacks in this area; they’re often targeted at tourists and are usually overpriced and mediocre.
- Regarding Tianzifang,... there currently aren't any special shops, and the visitor numbers have decreased, making me not highly recommend visiting.
Hope these suggestions help you, and remember to have fun in Shanghai!

Why come in June? It's the plum rain season – you'll get all moldy and miserable!
-
What about late May? I've just booked my tickets.
-
Don't come in the latter half of June! It's the plum rain season! It's drippy and damp every day. If you're not from a humid region (like the 'free shipping zone' areas), you'll find it really hard to get used to!

I'm going on June 4th, what will the weather be like?
-
While the North Bund is beautiful, I still love the Bund the most. It's as stunning as ever.
-
I'm going next week, but the weather forecast predicts rain. If it does rain, is staying indoors at a mall the only option?
-
If I arrive at Hongqiao Airport at 10:30 PM, can I make it to see the Bund lights before they're switched off at 11 PM?
-
Any recommendations for a family trip? We're planning on Disneyland and want to visit a few other spots as well.
-
Where's a good place to stay that's convenient for getting around and also moderately priced?
-
Keeping an eye out for small group tours.
-
What about August?

What time does the 2 RMB ferry run until?
