Well, this resonates with me so much! I'll retell your experience in a more down-to-earth way, making it easy for foreign friends to understand:

    • Shanghai City Walk: Yesterday, I ventured alone into the bustling metropolis of Shanghai — a huge, modern city in China!

      • Honestly, my round-trip journey took quite some time, but I only spent two hours truly exploring the city.
      • To be honest, I don't really like shopping, nor do I have much interest in those "must-visit" spots everyone talks about online, so famous scenic areas don't fascinate me that much.
      • This trip made me a bit disillusioned with "traveling," as I felt it was devoid of meaning.
    • At Home: When I wasn't out, my mind always longed to run away, thinking about how amazing the outside world was!

      • But after sitting through hours of travel, only to arrive dizzy and spend just two hours exploring somewhere... honestly, I felt it just wasn't worth it — lying comfortably in bed at home would've been better.
    • Musing: So, what exactly constitutes a real trip? What should traveling bring us? And how should we explore for the best experience?

    • Then I remembered: During last weekend, my husband and I rode our electric bikes on a local street near our home called Cangjie (about twenty minutes away by bike). It was fairly quiet and laid-back.

      • We took a leisurely stroll, chatted, visited boutiques, and bought some clothes I loved, making our time there especially relaxing and enjoyable.

    • A little heads-up for you travel buddies!
      • What to watch out for: If you have limited time, make sure to calculate the duration spent in transit! Like my trip to Shanghai where I spent more time commuting than actually exploring, which wasn't a great feeling.
        • How to avoid this: Before setting off, research transportation options. If a destination requires several hours of travel but you can only stay shortly, consider exploring spots closer to your hotel that offer easier access, allowing you to wander with ease and be happier throughout.

So yes, I don't think traveling has to be about going far. Anything that leaves you feeling at ease and happy is what "travel" should be, don't you think?
