That's just how Guangzhou is, you gotta get used to it. Even buses have to take the elevated roads, making the traffic even more chaotic. And get this, some turns on these elevated roads actually have traffic lights, which causes even more gridlock. It's just ridiculous.

And the parking fees are so expensive too; it feels like there's no daily cap.

Totally! Even locals can easily take a wrong turn if they're not familiar with a particular route.

It's my first time seeing a city with elevated roads and roundabouts everywhere. I'm completely spun around! 😳

I give up! I kept taking wrong turns all day and was exhausted. In the end, I just gave up and hailed a cab back to the hotel.

If you can mess up and miss the Inner Ring Road even at Zhongshan Interchange, then you'll find it even easier to get lost heading to Haizhu District. GPS navigation often has delays, and with so many diverging roads, you really need to look up at the signs. On another note, if it weren't for the Inner Ring Road elevated highway, Guangzhou's restrictions on out-of-town cars would be even tighter, and those drivers wouldn't even get the chance to complain.

Best not to drive in downtown Guangzhou; the metro is the most convenient way to get around.

When these roads were built, cars probably weren't even a thing yet!

You should check out the new district over in Nansha. It's a completely different story there – much easier to navigate.

Well, what can you do? The number of cars and e-scooters has exploded in the last decade or so. The old road designs just can't handle the load anymore.

That's just how the old city districts are. You have to remember, these areas were built decades ago. They've already made a huge effort to ease traffic by squeezing in numerous elevated roads in such narrow confines, but there's only so much capacity.
