Spent six days in Shenzhen over Chinese New Year. The weather was fantastic, the sea was so blue, and the temperature was comfortable. Definitely more pleasant than Nanjing! The whole family is thinking of moving to Shenzhen when the kids are older.

Public restrooms always have paper and are regularly cleaned – that's a huge plus!

I'm from Hong Kong and I love going to Shenzhen for food, drinks, and entertainment. Heading there again tomorrow for 4 days!

For food, Guangzhou is still a bit better though.

I'm a second-generation Shenzhen local, grew up here. I went to Guangzhou for university for four years but came back to Shenzhen after graduating. I'm so used to how incredibly efficient government services are here – it's so fast! Now you can even get everything done online without needing to go anywhere in person. Being able to save time and effort like that is fantastic. Plus, there are plenty of parks, transportation is convenient, and public restrooms always have paper. Once you've lived here for a while, you just get used to these conveniences.

When it comes to government services, it might not be quite up to par with the Jiangsu-Zhejiang region, but it's still pretty impressive.

Is it crowded at the seaside in July and August? I'm only planning to go once, mainly to see the ocean and take some photos, so I'm hoping it won't be too packed with people.

Around what time would you recommend going out to see the sights?

At 3 AM, Shenzhen North Station had free buses running – what a great city! I heard the subway also runs past 2 AM, which is fantastic. I was initially worried about how I'd get back at 3 AM.

Shenzhen is really cutting-edge in terms of lifestyle and technology. People from Hong Kong come here and don't want to leave. Now, on weekends, you see cars of all sizes coming over for shopping. The parks have all sorts of great non-powered play equipment and facilities, all free. Some parks even have showers. Honestly, it's really impressive.

                              Showers, that was a typo.

To be honest, as a second-generation Shenzhen local, I find Shenzhen too crowded and lacking a personal touch. Ever since I went abroad to study after middle school, I haven't really wanted to come back. I'm very patriotic, but I genuinely don't like Shenzhen that much. There are too many people, and it can feel impersonal. I also don't care for some of the locals who can be lazy, gossipy, and talk too much. (This isn't about everyone in the city, of course.) Sorry, but that's my honest feeling.

Everyone has their likes and dislikes; it's all about different perspectives. As a northerner spending Chinese New Year in Shenzhen for the first time, I've fallen in love with the city. You have no idea how amazing the temperature in Shenzhen is at this time of year! Back north, it's still freezing cold, but here in Shenzhen, the osmanthus flowers are still blooming and smell wonderful. If you're someone who can't stand the cold but loves flowers, you can't imagine how much you'd adore Shenzhen.

As a Shenzhen local, I won't list all the good things about the city, but there's one thing: Shenzhen is the only place where electric scooters and pedestrians are constantly battling for space on the sidewalks. You can just be walking and still get aggressively honked at (beep beep!).

That's the most intolerable thing about Shenzhen right now.
