Shenzhen is a big city, and it's quite inclusive.

In the early days of Reform and Opening Up, talented individuals from all over the country were recruited to build Shenzhen, so the overall caliber of people and the atmosphere were excellent. Now, there's a massive influx of... well, you know the type... all just looking to make a quick buck, then leaving a pile of 'trash' behind when they go.

I've visited Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen this year. It was my first time in Shenzhen. Honestly, the attractions weren't particularly surprising, but the city's urban planning and development are truly excellent, and everything looks very modern and new.

Anyone who can put down roots and thrive in a place like Shenzhen is truly impressive .

But aren't deposits like that (定金 - dìngjīn, often a non-refundable commitment deposit) usually non-refundable? I thought it was only booking fees (订金 - dìngjīn, often a more flexible reservation deposit) that could be refunded, right?

It's expensive. You're better off finding a hotel with good value nearby, buying your own tickets, and taking a taxi. It won't cost much.

Yeah, but that usually comes with a ton of conditions: you have to follow them, check in, post on Xiaohongshu, things like that. For some, you even have to wait in line. It's way too much trouble.

It's so incredibly noisy. The Guangzhou subway is the real nightmare ! When a group of them gets on, chattering away, it's like an exploding hot pot.

Exactly! The traffic has been inexplicably bad these past couple of days. Yesterday, a drive that should've taken 15 minutes stretched to 45. I was seriously over it.

No, it's a completely open street area. The Cantonese Opera Museum does require a reservation, but unless it's a public holiday, you can usually get a spot by booking on the same day.
